The Body Says What Words Cannot
Understanding How …Physical Conditions Affect Behavior and Emotions

Twenty-five years ago, one of my professors said, “Behind every twisted thought is a twisted molecule”. Perfect example of the brain-body connection. It changed my life and the direction of my studies. I became excited at the prospect of helping people find simple, yet subtle, sometimes mysterious answers to their anxiety, depression, ADD, and other mood and behavioral disorders.   The findings of following study are very unique in the world of science. I am so glad that conventional science is finally catching up --- catching up to the many worlds of natural medicine:  Naturopathic, Homeopathic, Ayurvedic, Chinese, Japanese, and the list goes on. These worlds have known for years that -- the body and brain are connected!

Emotional and Behavioral Problems Linked to Physical Imbalances?

“Mental Health in the United States: Health Care and Well Being of Children With Chronic Emotional, Behavioral, or Developmental Problems”, Journal of American Medical Assoc, Nov 2005;294:2567-2569.  Two thirds of the participating children with emotional, behavioral and developmental problems also had chronic physical conditions, such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, frequent headaches, hearing or vision problems, or bone, joint or muscle problems.

This study is a good example of the body-mind connection. It makes sense that people with chronic emotional and behavioral problems would also have certain physical symptoms. In the ideal world, we would address the physical, mental and emotional problems simultaneously. But in this age of defined specialties, we seem to lose perspective on wholeness. Physical symptoms are overlooked as unrelated to the emotional or behavioral, and vice versa.

In other words, headaches are treated with aspirin or Tylenol, and not linked to the child’s behavior or ADHD. Depression is treated with an anti-depressant, and not considered a result of low blood sugar or stress hormone imbalance.

These physical symptoms are clues to both the cause and the treatment of many mental and emotional disorders. They are not isolated during a traditional medical diagnosis. But if they were discovered through other forms of testing, then they could be addressed. And we would begin to see a lessening of the mental, emotional and behavioral problems. In fact, a whole new world would be revealed.

In this world, the brain and the physical body talk to each other. We are a great bundle of energy with billions of communicating electrical transmissions – not a shell with disjointed organ systems. Most conventional doctors make diagnoses that are going to affect a child for years to come, with no tests and no correlations to physical body. They don’t seem to see the connection between the brain and the body of their patients – the people sitting right in front of them. What a slip-up; what an oversight.

Parents see this connection more than the doctors do. They see and know their child as a whole person, who by the sheer definition of a human being has a body and brain that work in tandem. They dance, they flow, or they have two left feet.

By identifying the underlying physical connections to the mental, emotional or behavioral problems and addressing them with specific super foods, homeopathics and nutritionals, the whole child emerges – the one you know – deep down inside.

Here are the eight major nutritional and biochemical imbalances related to mental, emotional, behavior and learning problems:

1. Blood Sugar Imbalances
2. Nutrient Deficiencies
3. Infection
4. Allergies and Sensitivities
5. Toxicity or “Body Overload”
6. Metabolic Imbalances
7. Hormone Imbalances
8. Neurotransmitter Imbalances

Each of the above plays a specific role in mental and cognitive function, emotional and behavioral imbalances. We will address each category in successive articles.
